White paper on industry policy

SFI Manufacturing has an ambition to be a representative player for the national manufacturing industry. Norwegian manufacturing industry is leading in some niches with innovative combinations of advanced materials, products, and manufacturing processes. The industry creates value for the Norwegian society and is accountable for 15% of Norway’s GVA and 9% of GDP. There is also a large number of jobs indirectly dependent on the value creation in the manufacturing sector.

The Ministry of Research and Education published a Norwegian Official Report (NOU) “Langtidsplan for forskning og høyere utdanning 2014–2024” describing the research and education level needed to reach the high ambitions for a future Norwegian knowledge-based society. The report underlines that cross-disciplinary collaboration often is a prerequisite for ground-breaking research. Novel ICT technologies can be a game changer for manufacturing, and the report argues that Norwegian industry must keep up with the international pace on efficient and customized manufacturing. Robotics and Additive Manufacturing Technology (a.k.a. 3D printing) are named specifically as important areas.

SFI Manufacturing fits these strategies very well with a special focus on the technologies as well as a multidisciplinary approach. Furthermore, manufacturing is often a prerequisite for a distributed settlement, since most of the manufacturing sites are outside the larger cities. The NOU 2014 underlines this as well as stating how important manufacturing is for value adding and the Balance Of Trade (BOT).

In 2016, SFI Manufacturing gave an input to the Norwegian Governments white paper on industry policy. Our motivation was to be a research collaboration for strengthening Norwegian industry now as well as in the future. In this input we placed our focus on the importance of the inward benefits we have by producing in Norway, even with higher wages.
